Internships

Blue Ridge Literacy internships offer the opportunity to work in a non-profit environment and develop tutoring and/or teaching skills; to create and implement projects that benefit adult literacy learners; to meet learners from different countries and gain concise language skills; and to develop professional skills needed in a fast-paced office environment. Interested applicants should have an interest in teaching, nonprofits, literacy, and other cultures. We accept up to two interns per semester for spring, summer, and fall.

Education Internship​

  • Instruct tutoring sessions and small-group classes with adult literacy learners

  • Create lessons and teaching material relevant to learners’ individual goals and needs

  • Provide support and outreach to current BRL literacy volunteers

  • Lead community and organizational events such as Sobremesa, Yoga Socials, Citizenship Celebrations, and the Annual Celebration

  • Assist Program Director with data entry, as needed

 

Qualifications: Interns should want to teach and tutor adult literacy learners or small groups; be excited about collaborative opportunities with other BRL teachers, staff, and volunteers; and interested in meeting new people who possess different life experiences.

Capacity and Outreach Internship

  • Maintain BRL Social Media by producing content, scheduling posts, and making regular updates to BRL Facebook, Twitter, Instagram pages

  • Assist in making and maintaining BRL promotional materials through web, film, and photo sources

  • Lead outreach efforts to community groups, including church, nonprofit, business, and corporate partners

  • Conduct research related to literacy and immigration in Roanoke and the state of Virginia

  • Assist in grant proposal process, including proof-reading, editing, and writing

 

Qualifications: Interns should be proficient with social media platforms, excited about meeting new people, interested in writing and improving writing skills, and eager to work in a nonprofit environment.
