Citizenship Classes

Blue Ridge Literacy offers citizenship preparation classes to assist adult learners with the successful completion of their naturalization process. These classes focus on the English literacy and civics knowledge needed for passing the test, as well as information about their rights and responsibilities as American citizens. 

Programs and schedule

Intermediate/ Advanced U.S. Citizenship Preparation 

Online class for adult ESOL students who have at least basic conversational English and are actively preparing for their U.S. Naturalization Process. Individuals who have filed their N-400, or who are about to, would be suitable candidates for this program. 

In-Person Class Time:  Fridays 10:00 am-12:00 pm

or

Online Class Time:  Mondays 6:00-7:30 pm 

Beginner-level EL/ Civics

In-person course for adult ESOL students who are on the pathway to U.S. Citizenship and also need to improve English literacy skills.  Individuals who are interested in the possibility of obtaining U.S. citizenship and are beginner-level English speakers are suitable candidates for this program. 

Class time: Mondays, 10:00 am-12:00 pm In-Person

U.S. Citizenship Study Group 

Online study group for adult ESOL students who are in the final stages of naturalization and are scheduled to take their U.S. Citizenship test.

Time: Mondays 6:00-7:30 pm

How much do classes at BRL cost?

There is a one-time $30 registration fee. 

Where is my class located?

FFCU Citizenship Classes are located at 706 S. Jefferson St. We are located in the basement of the Main Library in Downtown Roanoke.

What will we do in class?

FFCU Citizenship Classes will help you remember the 100 civics questions, teach you about US history, government, laws, as well as improve your reading and writing skills.

What is the cost to apply for citizenship?

The application cost is $725. This does not include travel costs. More information is available at the USCIS website

Where will I take my citizenship test?

You will travel to the USCIS office in Norfolk, Virginia, to take your test.

How will I know I will pass my test?

BRL will let you know when we think you are ready to pass your test. We will be able to determine this based on your reading assessment score and performance in class.

What do I need to know to pass?

You must learn 100 civics questions, be able to respond to questions, and read and write at a High Beginning literacy level.

When can I start taking classes?

We recommend you start studying as soon as you are eligible, or as soon as you have submitted your N-400 application.
